2019 French Open Betting Odds Preview
Despite an up-and-down season, Rafael Nadal is the favorite on the men’s side heading into the start of the French Open this weekend.
At Bovada Sportsbook, Nadal is a +105 favorite to claim his 12th career French Open title. He added No. 11 to his total last year and has won the French Open in seven of the last nine years. Last week, Nadal won his first title of the season, defeating Novak Djokovic on clay at the Italian Open, which is bad news for the rest of the field at Roland Garros.
Following Nadal on the French Open odds are Djokovic at +225 and Dominic Thiem at +550. Djokovic’s lone French Open title came back in 2016 and in the last two years he’s bowed out in the quarterfinals each time.
Thiem reached his first Grand Slam final at the French Open last year when he fell to Nadal in three sets.
Other former French Open winners in this year’s field include Roger Federer, who’s listed at +2000, and Stan Wawrinka, a +5000 underdog.
Halep +400 to repeat as women’s champ
On the women’s side, defending champion Simona Halep is the favorite to repeat at +400. Last year’s win was Halep’s first career Grand Slam title and her second straight appearance in the French Open final. In 2017 she lost to Jeļena Ostapenko, who is a +8000 long shot to win again this year.
Following Halep on the French Open futures are Kiki Bertens at +800 and Naomi Osaka and Sloane Stephens, both at +1100.
Bertens is looking for her first career Grand Slam and is playing some of the best tennis of her career right now, including upsetting Halep in the final of the Madrid Open earlier this month. Her best career showing at the French Open was reaching the quarterfinals in 2016.
Osaka, the current No. 1 on the WTA, has won the last two Grand Slams after capturing the Australian Open earlier this year and last year’s U.S. Open. She’s had a rocky season on clay so far and pulled out of the Italian Open earlier this month due to a hand injury.
Stephens made it to the final at last year’s French Open before losing to Halep. The 2017 U.S. Open champ had never made it past the fourth round at Roland Garros before last year.
Other former French Open champs in this year’s field include Garbine Muguruza at +1200, two-time winner Serena Williams at +1200, two-time winner Maria Sharapova at +8000 and Svetlana Kuznetsova at +10000.
