British Open Betting Odds Preview
The Claret Jug will be engraved with a new name this weekend when the British Open returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews.
At Bovada Sportsbook, the British Open betting favorite is Rory McIlroy at +1000.
McIlroy previously won the British Open in 2014 when it was held at Royal Liverpool. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the world and so far in 2022 has one win in the Canadian Open and three other top-five finishes.
McIlroy favored in odds to win 2022 British Open
Following McIlroy on the British Open odds at Bovada are Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele, all at +1600.
By his own standards, Rahm’s performance has been disappointing lately. Last week in the Scottish Open, he finished well back, tied for 55th place. He did record a win in May in the Mexico Open, which is his lone win on the PGA Tour so far this season. He posted his best career finish in the British Open last year when he tied for third place at Royal St. George’s.
Spieth is a former British Open champion, having won in 2017 at Royal Birkdale. Last week in the Scottish Open, he tied for 10th place, which was his fourth top-10 finish of the year. Spieth came up just short in the British Open last year when he finished second.
Schauffele coming off consecutive tour victories
Schauffele could be the best bet right now after winning his last two tournaments. Last week, he shot 7 under par to win the Scottish Open by one stroke over Kurt Kitayama. Two weeks earlier, he also won the Travelers Championship.
Schauffele has never won a major and his best career finish in the British Open came last year when he tied for 26th place. The winner of the Scottish Open has gone on to win the British Open only once – in 2013, when Phil Mickelson won both events.
The defending champion of the British Open is Collin Morikawa, who is a +3300 underdog to repeat. Last year, he won his second major in his first British Open at Royal St. George’s, shooting 15 under par to finish ahead of Spieth by two strokes. Morikawa missed the cut at the Scottish Open last week and tied for fifth place at the U.S. Open a few weeks earlier.
Johnson won in playoff in 2015 at St. Andrews
The British Open was last played at St. Andrews in 2015. That year Zach Johnson won his second major by defeating Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff. Johnson is a +30000 long shot at Bovada to win at St. Andrews again.
In 2010, Oosthuizen won at St. Andrews while Tiger Woods won in 2005 and 2000. Oosthuizen is a +5000 underdog this year, while Woods is listed at +6600.
Other former British Open winners in the field this year include 2019 winner Shane Lowry (+2500), 2018 winner Francesco Molinari (+25000), 2016 winner Henrik Stenson (+25000), 2013 winner Phil Mickelson (+25000) and 2011 winner Darren Clarke (+50000).
