NFL Week 9 Odds Report
NFL Week 9 lines are now making their way to sportsbooks following a dramatic weekend of football. With the calendar turning to November, teams in the postseason hunt will be playing with extra motivation. On the other hand, teams with no shot at the playoffs could be waving the white flag for the next two months. Here's a look at some early odds for Week 9 at Bodog:
New York Jets at Detroit Lions (+3.5, 42.5)
If the Detroit Lions have proven anything to NFL bettors this season it's that they can put some big numbers on the scoreboard. Detroit's offense came off the bye and lit the Washington Redskins up for 37 points in Week 8, covering for the sixth time this season.
With a puncher's chance, oddsmakers have been careful not to discount the Lions at home against a New York Jets team that was just shut out by the Green Bay Packers, losing 9-0 as 6.5-point home favorites. The Jets did manage to move the chains but couldn't crack the end zone due to turnovers and dropped balls.
Loyal Gang Green bettors have already moved this number to +4 at some markets. With that move away from the key number, expect the spread to get as high as +5 – a no-man's land for football pointspreads.
New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks (+5.5, 41)
The New York Giants may have had the day off in Week 8 but bettors still remember what they did against the Dallas Cowboys two Mondays ago. New York looks like the team to beat in the NFC, winning four straight games while cover the NFL pointspreads in three of those contests.
Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is already shaking in his Reeboks after watching the Giants' pass rush knock out QB after QB this season. The Seahawks are coming off a 33-3 beatdown by the Oakland Raiders, in which Hasselbeck was sacked eight times and suffered a mild concussion. Things could get messy in Week 9.
Bettors have already jumped on the G-Men, pushing them from 4.5 to 5.5-point faves. Expect that number to climb as the week goes on, especially if Hasselbeck's concussion puts him on the sidelines. The way New York is crunching quarterbacks, who could blame him for calling in sick.
Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers (-9, 44.5)
It is a hard thing to do to a huge public favorite like the Dallas Cowboys, but Week 9's 9-point spread in Green Bay is a sign that oddsmakers have securely fastened the toe tag on America's Team. And this number could be bigger, but books are still wary of those diehard Dallas bettors chasing their losses.
Green Bay's defense blanked the New York Jets on Sunday; however, that doesn't say much for the Packers' offense. They got all their points off the foot of kicker Mason Crosby while putting up only 237 yards of total offense.
This number opened as low as -8 at some shops and was bet up to -9 instantly. Unless Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally drops the ax in Big D, or Aaron Rodgers' ankle injury is worse than expected, this spread could stay put until kickoff on Sunday night.
