Super Bowl 50 Props: Coin Toss, Gatorade
Heads or tails? Super Bowl prop bets don’t get much simpler than the opening coin toss. Maybe because it’s so simple it’s also the most popular Super Bowl prop of them all. You could pull a coin out of your pocket, throw it in the air and you’ve got your first bet.
Even though the coin toss is completely random there is some history behind it. Five of the last seven Super Bowl coin tosses have been heads. The team that has won the coin toss has won four of the last six Super Bowls. The 50/50 split has been nearly perfect with 24 heads and 25 tails in Super Bowl history.
Right now at online sportsbook Bovada heads and tails are both at -105. If the coin flips the right way you could start the big game in the red.
While the coin flip gets things started there are a number of other props that don’t get decided until the game’s conclusion. This includes the traditional Gatorade shower for the head coach.
The important thing for bettors is what color liquid ends up on the coach's head. The favorite is the classic orange at +125, followed by blue at +300, clear and yellow at +400, red at +600, and green and purple at +1000.
Last year blue was the winner as Bill Belichick was doused in blue liquid following the Patriots’ win. In Super Bowl history the most popular color has actually been clear with four coaches getting it. Orange has rained down three times, yellow and purple twice each, and blue made its Super Bowl debut last year.
After the Gatorade shower comes the postgame interviews. The Super Bowl MVP gets the spotlight treatment here and you can actually make it worth watching by placing a prop bet.
The Bovada oddsmakers want to know who the MVP will mention first. Co-favorites are God and the team at +200. There are also the city/fans at +600, coach +750, family +1500, and for the selfish winner, does not mention anyone at +225.
