Super Bowl 57 Betting Update
It’s less than a week until the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles face off in Super Bowl 57 but that’s still plenty of time for bettors to scrounge up information before placing their bets.
The spread on Super Bowl 57 has changed slightly since last week. At Bovada Sportsbook, the Eagles are listed as 1.5-point favorites, down from the 2-point spread they were getting last week.
Mahomes has been a full participant in practices
Injuries are always a concern heading into the big game and both sides have a few players worth watching at practice this week. It seemed like Patrick Mahomes was going to be one to watch this week as he continues to deal with a high ankle sprain, but that appears to not be the case. Mahomes took part in full practice all week and looks ready to go for the Super Bowl.
While Mahomes is ready for Sunday, three Kansas City wide receivers – Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kadarius Toney – missed practice all week. Hardman will be on the sidelines on Sunday after being put on injured reserve earlier this week. Smith-Schuster and Toney both skipped practice all week and are considered questionable. Smith-Schuster is dealing with a knee injury, while Toney has ankle and hamstring issues. Both will likely be ready to go on Sunday but bear watching in practice this week.
Edwards-Helaire activated after 9-game absence
One other notable injury update for the Chiefs this week was the activation of Clyde Edwards-Helaire from the IR. He missed the last nine games with an ankle injury but could join Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon in the Kansas City backfield on Sunday.
For the Eagles, the big names are all healthy, but a few notable players missed practice last week, including defensive end Robert Quinn (foot), offensive tackle Lane Johnson (groin) and offensive guard Landon Dickerson (elbow). All three are expected to be ready to go on Sunday but should be watched in practice, especially Johnson and Dickerson, who are key components of the offensive line.
Teams have gone OVER in 4 of last 5 meetings
If you’re a totals bettor, the total currently sits at 50.5, up one point from the opening total of 49.5. When the Chiefs are listed as an underdog, they’re 12-4 OVER in their last 16 games. In the last five matchups between the Eagles and Chiefs, the OVER is 4-1. One trend pointing the other way is that the Eagles have posted four straight UNDERs and have gone UNDER in five straight games when favored.
Taking the favorite against the spread in the Super Bowl has been a losing bet in recent years. Favorites have lost the last two Super Bowls against the spread, and they’re 3-8 ATS in their last 11.
