Super Bowl Props Betting Preview Part 2
Last week we went over a selection of standout props from Super Bowl 56. There’s still plenty that we didn’t get to, so here’s a rundown of a few more.
Let’s start with the odds on the Super Bowl 56 MVP. Not surprisingly, leading the way on the odds at Bovada Sportsbook are Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford at +125 and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow at +235. Nine of the last 12 Super Bowl MVPs – and 31 overall – have been quarterbacks, so a QB is often a smart bet.
Stafford, Burrow front-runners to win Super Bowl MVP
Following Stafford and Burrows on the odds list are Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp at +600, Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald at +1000 and Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase at +1500. Seven wide receivers have won the MVP, with the last being Julian Edelman in 2019. A defensive player has won the award 10 times. Coincidentally, the last defensive player to win was Von Miller in 2016 with the Denver Broncos. Miller, now with the Rams, is a +3500 underdog to win the award again.
Before looking at a few more props, let’s review one we touched on last week, the national anthem. Mickey Guyton will be singing the Star-Spangled Banner and the Bovada oddsmakers have updated the OVER/UNDER for how long it will take her to sing the song with the number now at one minute 38 seconds. Last year, Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan went well over that at two minutes 17 seconds, and the last nine anthem singers have all gone over 1:38.
Philly Special encore an underdog in Super Bowl props
Now let’s look at a few props that could pay well if the unexpected happens. The first prop falling into that category is “Will a non-quarterback throw a touchdown pass?” The Yes option is a +675 underdog. This has been an interesting prop ever since the Philadelphia Eagles pulled off the Philly Special in Super Bowl 52 against the Patriots. The chances of that happening this Sunday don’t look great, though, as the Bengals attempted only one non-QB pass all season and the Rams tried only two, and one was by the punter.
Another long-shot prop is whether there will be a kick return for a touchdown. Yes here would pay +650. The last kick return for a touchdown in a Super Bowl was by Percy Harvin in Super Bowl 48 in 2014. Neither team boasts a Devin Hester or a Desmond Howard, but Brandon Powell did return a kickoff for a TD for the Rams this season.
McPherson, Gay combined to miss only 3 PATs this year
The last prop on our list is “Will there be a missed PAT?” Yes here would pay +215. This season, Bengals kicker Evan McPherson was 48-for-49 on his PATs, while Rams kicker Matt Gay was 46-of-48 on his.
