Super Bowl 52 Betting Preview

It’s the New England Patriots versus the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 52, with New England favored to bring home another world title.

The Patriots are currently a 5-point favorite at Bovada Sportsbook after opening the week as a 6-point favorite. New England needed another patented Tom Brady comeback to make it back to the big game, erasing a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars to win 24-20. The Patriots, an 8-point favorite, failed to cover the spread but still boast an impressive 9-1 record straight up and 7-3 mark against the spread in their last 10 playoff games.

The Eagles posted another upset win last week by knocking off the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 as a 3-point home underdog. Nick Foles delivered a clutch performance with three touchdown passes as Philadelphia improved to 4-1 SU and ATS this season as an underdog. In their last eight games in the postseason, the Eagles are a profitable 7-1 ATS, although they’re 4-4 SU.

This matchup is a rematch of Super Bowl 39. In 2005 the Patriots edged the Eagles 24-21 as a 7-point favorite. Brady led the New England offense in that game, but no other player on either side is still around.

The last time the Eagles and Patriots met up was in the 2015 season. In a December game in New England, the Eagles upset the Patriots 35-28 as an 8-point underdog. That actually doesn’t bode well for Philadelphia as the Patriots are 14-2 SU in their last 16 games after losing the previous game in a matchup.

Even with the previous loss, New England has dominated the matchup at 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS in their last five. However, for bettors the Eagles have been the smart pick in the matchup with a 7-2 record ATS in their last nine against New England.

The Patriots return to the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season and for the eighth time with Brady. In case you somehow forgot, they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime in last year’s Super Bowl as a 3-point favorite. In Brady’s seven previous Super Bowl appearances, New England is 5-2 SU and 3-4 ATS. The Patriots were favored in five of those games, going 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS.
