2020 BMW Championship Betting Preview

The FedExCup playoffs continue this week with the second stop on the playoff schedule, the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois.

Last week, Dustin Johnson began the playoffs by dominating at the Northern Trust. Johnson shot an astounding 30 under par that was 11 strokes better than runner-up Harris English. That was Johnson’s second win on the tour since play resumed following the COVID-19 break, and he also finished second at this season’s lone major to date, the PGA Championship.

Johnson favored coming off scintillating Northern Trust win

The win last week moved Johnson into first place in the FedExCup standings, moved him into top spot on the World Golf Rankings, and practically forced the oddsmakers at Bovada Sportsbook to list him as a +800 favorite in this week’s BMW Championship.

Johnson has won the BMW Championship twice previously. In 2010 he won at Cog Hill and he claimed the title again in 2016 at Crooked Stick.

Following Johnson on the BMW Championship odds at Bovada are Jon Rahm at +1000 and Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, both at +1200.

Rahm tied for sixth place last week at the Northern Trust, but he was still 14 strokes back of Johnson.

DeChambeau won 2015 U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields

DeChambeau had a difficult time at the Northern Trust and missed the cut. One interesting note about DeChambeau: he’s one of the only players in this week’s field to win at Olympia Fields. DeChambeau won the 2015 U.S. Amateur when it was held on the course.

Thomas is the defending champion of the BMW Championship. Last year he won at Medinah after shooting 25 under par, which was three strokes better than Patrick Cantlay. Last week at the Northern Trust, Thomas finished well back, tying for 49th place.

Along with Johnson and Thomas, other former BMW Championship winners in this week’s field include 2017 winner Marc Leishman at +15000, 2015 winner Jason Day at +3300, 2014 winner Billy Horschel at +6600, 2012 winner Rory McIlroy at +1600 and two-time winner Tiger Woods at +4000. It’s important for bettors to note that none of those wins took place at Olympia Fields.

The odds on a few other notables this week who could be value picks for bettors include PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa at +2200, Patrick Cantlay at +3300 and Harris English at +3300.
