PGA Betting: WGC-Workday Championship

The first WGC event of the year arrives this week, as a star-studded field heads to the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, for the WGC-Workday Championship.

The favorite at Bovada Sportsbook this week is Dustin Johnson at +600. Johnson has won this tournament three times already, in 2019, 2017 and 2015.

Johnson has won tourney three times on different tracks

Those three previous wins may not give Johnson much of an advantage this week, as this is the first time the tournament is being held at the Concession. His wins in 2017 and 2019 took place in Mexico, while his 2015 win was at Doral.

Last week at the Genesis Invitational, Johnson was also the favorite and ended up finishing tied for eighth. In his last six tournaments, he has five finishes in the top eight, including a pair of wins.

Following Johnson on the odds list at Bovada are the usual suspects, with Jon Rahm at +1000, Rory McIlroy at +1400, Xander Schauffele at +1600, and Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas both at +1800.

DeChambeau claimed collegiate crown at Concession

From those five, Rahm had the best showing last week at the Invitational, tying for fifth place. Schauffele tied for 15th place, while McIlroy, DeChambeau and Thomas all missed the cut. McIlroy and Thomas performed particularly poorly last week, as McIlroy was 7 over after two rounds and Thomas was 8 over.

Before moving on, there’s one interesting note regarding DeChambeau for this week’s tournament. He may have a leg up on some of the field because he’s played and won at the Concession before. The 2015 NCAA Division 1 men’s golf championship was held at the Concession and it was won by DeChambeau.

Reed has +2800 odds to become three-time champ

The winner of the Invitational last week was Max Homa, who recorded his second tour win by besting Tony Finau in a playoff. Homa is in the WGC field this week as a +5000 underdog. Finau is also there and is listed at +2000 at Bovada.

Aside from Johnson, there are only a few other former winners of this event in the field this week. They include defending champion Patrick Reed, who also won it in 2014. Reed is getting +2800 odds to win a third this week. Other former champions available include 2016 winner Adam Scott at +6600 and 2012 winner Justin Rose, also at +6600.
