PGA Betting: AT&T Byron Nelson Preview

The AT&T Byron Nelson returns to the PGA Tour schedule this week but at a different venue as the event moves to TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

Last year’s Byron Nelson was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Had it gone ahead, it would have been played at the Trinity Ford Golf Club, which had hosted the event since 2018. This will be the first time the tournament will be hosted at TPC Craig Ranch.

Rahm, DeChambeau share top spot on oddsboard

The co-favorites in the Byron Nelson at Bovada Sportsbook are Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, both at +900. They’re followed on the odds list by Jordan Spieth at +1200.

Rahm will be looking to bounce back from a poor performance in last week’s Wells Fargo Championship in which he missed the cut. The No. 3-ranked golfer in the world has five top-10 finishes this season and a pair of top-five finishes, but he has yet to post a win.

DeChambeau had a bit of an embarrassing misstep last week at the Wells Fargo. He thought he had missed the cut and flew home only to find out he had made the cut and had to quickly fly back to North Carolina. The return trip proved to be worth it as he ended up finishing tied for ninth place. That was his sixth top-10 finish this season.

Spieth back in action for first time since Masters

Spieth will be playing his first event since the Masters in mid-April. He may be worth a bet this weekend if he keeps up the stellar play that continued at Augusta National. He tied for third in the Masters a week after posting his first win of the season at the Valero Texas Open. Spieth has cracked the top five in five of his last seven tournaments.

A few other notables on the odds list at Bovada are Brooks Koepka at +1800 and Hideki Matsuyama at +2000. This will be the first tournament for both since the Masters, where Matsuyama won his first major and Koepka missed the cut in his first tournament back since having knee surgery.

Defending champ comes in as big underdog

Since last year’s Byron Nelson was canceled, the reigning champion is 2019 winner Sung Kang. He returns this year to defend as a +25000 long shot at Bovada. Kang has missed the cut in five of his last seven tournaments, including last week’s Wells Fargo.

This week’s field includes four other former winners of the Byron Nelson. They are 2018 winner Aaron Wise (+6600), 2004 and 2016 winner Sergio Garcia (+4000), 2010 winner Jason Day (+5000) and 2009 winner Rory Sabbitini (+25000).
