PGA Betting: Northern Trust Odds

The FedExCup playoffs begin this week as the top 125 players on tour head to Liberty National in New Jersey for the Northern Trust.

The venue of the Northern Trust changes every year, and this is the first time it will be returning to Liberty National since 2019. At the Bovada Sportsbook the favorite this week is Jon Rahm at +1000.

This will be Rahm’s first event since he tied for third place at the British Open back in the middle of July. He was supposed to represent Spain at the Olympics but another positive COVID-19 test cancelled that appearance. In 2019 when the Northern Trust was last held at Liberty National, Rahm finished tied for third.

Spieth, Johnson, McIlroy follow on the odds list

Following Rahm on the odds list are Jordan Spieth at +1600, Dustin Johnson at +1800 and both Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy at +2000. Next in line are Xander Schauffele at +2200, Justin Thomas at +2500, and each of Brooks Kopeka, Bryson DeChambeau and Daniel Berger at +2800.

Spieth tied for 12th place in his last event, the WGC-St. Jude Invitational. He tied for sixth at Liberty National in 2019.

Johnson is the defending champion of the Northern Trust and also the defending FedExCup champion. At last year’s Northern Trust, held at TPC Boston, Johnson shot an impressive 30-under par for an 11-stroke victory. That was Johnson’s third Northern Trust win, as he previously won in 2011 at Plainfield and in 2017 at Glen Oaks.

Morikawa enters event atop FedExCup standings

Morikawa will enter the tournament atop the FedExCup standings. Prior to tying for 16th at the WGC he had posted four straight top-four finishes, including his British Open win. This week he’ll be looking to improve on his 52nd place finish in 2019 at Liberty National.

The last time the Northern Trust was held at Liberty National in 2019 the winner was Patrick Reed. In 2019 Reed shot 16-under par for a one-stroke victory over Abraham Ancer. Reed also won the Northern Trust in 2016 when it was held at Bethpage Black. At the Bovada Sportsbook this week Reed is a +5000 underdog, while Ancer is listed at +4000.

Last week on the PGA Tour the Wyndham Championship ended with a six-player playoff to decide the champ. Kevin Kisner was the last man standing from that six-man group which also included Adam Scott, Brendan Grace, Kevin Na, Si-Woo Kim, and Roger Sloan. Kisner is in the field this week as a +6600 underdog while Scott, who won the Northern Trust in 2013 when it was also held at Liberty National, is listed at +4000.

Other former winners of the Northern Trust (none of which won at Liberty National) in this week’s field include 2018 winner DeChambeau (+2800), 2015 winner Jason Day (+12500), and 2010 winner Matt Kuchar (+25000).
