College Football Weekend Bowls Preview
A full plate of bowl games takes us into the new year this weekend starting on Friday night with the Sun Bowl featuring the Oregon State Beavers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
At the Bovada Sportsbook the Fighting Irish are 6.5-point favorites. Notre Dame was 9-3 straight up and 8-3-1 against the spread this season. They were 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five games during the regular season, and when favored they are 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last seven. As a bowl game favorite they’ve won four straight with a 3-1 ATS record.
Oregon State was 8-4 SU and 6-6 ATS this season. They were 1-4 ATS in their last five games, and as an underdog they’re 1-5 SU and 3-3 ATS in their last six. In their last five bowl games the Beavers are 2-3 SU and ATS.
Oregon State and Notre Dame met in the 2004 Insight Bowl and the Beavers won 38-21 as 3-point favorites. The Beavers also defeated the Fighting Irish in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl by a score of 41-9 as 3-point favorites.
Georgia heavy favorite taking on Florida State
On Saturday in the Orange Bowl the Georgia Bulldogs face the shorthanded Florida State Seminoles as 16-point favorites.
The Bulldogs were 12-1 SU and 4-7-1 ATS this season. They were undefeated before falling to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game by a score of 27-24 as 5.5-point favorites. The Bulldogs have won six straight bowl games with a 4-2 ATS record.
Florida State was a perfect 13-0 SU this season with an 8-5 ATS record. As an underdog they’re 7-1 ATS in their last eight games. In 10 previous Orange Bowl appearances they were 5-5 SU.
In the 2003 Sugar Bowl Georgia defeated Florida State 26-13 as 7.5-point favorites.
Peach Bowl, Music City Bowl also on the slate
In the Peach Bowl the Penn State Nittany Lions face the Mississippi Rebels as 4-point favorites.
Penn State was 10-2 SU and 9-3 ATS this season. When favored they’ve won 21 straight with a 17-3-1 ATS record. As bowl game favorites they’re 6-1 SU and 4-2-1 ATS in their last seven.
Mississippi was 10-2 SU and 6-4-2 ATS this season. That includes going 7-1 SU and 3-3-2 ATS in their last eight games. As bowl game underdogs the Rebels have been a good wager at 5-1 SU and ATS in their last six games.
In the Music City Bowl the Auburn Tigers face the Maryland Terrapins as 7-point favorites.
Auburn was 6-6 SU and ATS this season. When favored they’re 9-1 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games. The Tigers have lost their last three bowl games both SU and ATS, and they’re 1-5 SU and ATS in their last six.
Maryland was 7-5 SU and 6-6 ATS this season. They finished the regular season with three straight wins ATS, but as an underdog they’re 1-7 SU and 4-4 ATS in their last eight. In their last 10 bowl games the Terrapins are 6-4 SU and ATS.
