odds of exact points in a seasonm
Las Vegas - Before we get to the actual Super Bowl pick in tomorrow's column, a few more delicious props that deserve your attention. Thinking that somewhere along the line, one of the teams is gonna be stopped in the red zone, which is why we're betting on a field goal between 1-22 yards at 8/1. Gotta take a little taste of the 1st TD scored, and grabbing Philly's DeVonta Smith at 10/1 and Kaycee's JuJu Smith-Schuster at 12/1. Close out the prop parade with a long shot, and tickle Miles Sanders to win the MVP at 30/1.
Yesterday, we talked about the BIZARRE stat in which BOTH teams have scored EXACTLY 546 points. We turned to an old friend, Blackjack Hall of Famer and math genius, Don Schlesinger, to explain. You have the floor Don.
"If one team just has any random number of points, then were looking for the probability that the other team will match that number. So we just have to come up with a reasonable range of total points one team could have for the 19 games, and then count the possible outcomes. The odds, then, that the other team matches are just 1/n, where n is the number of reasonably possible outcomes for the first team.
Suppose we both draw a card from a deck. What are the odds we both have the same card? Do you see that its just 1/52? You can have any card at all. Doesnt matter. Then I have to match it. One chance in 52.
So what could be the total number of points for either team? Lets say an average of anywhere from 24 to 32 points per game (the average for each of this year's SB participants is 28+). So thats anywhere from 456 points to 608 points for the whole season, or 153 different numbers.
I think, at the start of the season, if I had to make a line on this, Id make it at least 150 to 1, if not higher."
