Rice got 17 points from Travis Evee as they ran past Southern Mississippi 77-72 on Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice won the battle on the scoreboard, but not at the payout window as they failed to cover the -15.0-point spread.
Carl Pierre had 17 points for Rice and Max Fiedler chipped in with 13 points. Terrance McBride had 9 assists for them, while Max Fiedler was the team's top rebounder, grabbing 14 boards.
Southern Mississippi got 29 points from Walyn Napper in a losing cause and another 17 points from Isaih Moore. Walyn Napper contributed 7 assists for them, while Walyn Napper had 8 rebounds.
Rice was losing at the break before taking care of business in the second half.
Rice won the battle of the boards, outrebounding their counterparts 43-30.
